The Conservation Good Turn is an opportunity for Cub Scout packs to join with conservation or environmental organizations (federal, state, local, or private) to carry out a conservation Good Turn in their home communities.
The World Conservation Award provides an opportunity for individual Cub Scouts to 'think globally' and 'act locally' to preserve and improve our environment.
Good Turn for America is a collaboration between the Boy Scouts of America and the Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity, American Red Cross, and thousands of other community organizations that focuses the power of volunteerism on important community issues.
The National Den Award recognizes dens that conduct a quality, year-round program. Service projects, Cub Scout Academics and Sports, field trips, character development, and Cub Scout camping are areas that are emphasized. Dens earn the award as a team, not as individual den members. The recognition is a ribbon for the den flag or den doodle.
This award is a national program of emphasis designed to heighten fitness awareness and to help change the lifestyles of American youth and adults regarding exercise and a healthy diet to improve the quality of their lives.
To encourage members to grow stronger in their faith, religious groups have developed religious emblems programs.
The Boy Scouts of America's Crime Prevention Program assists neighborhoods and communities in their efforts to prevent crime by emphasizing youth, family, and community.
Cub Scouts at all levels from Tiger to Webelos can earn the Outdoor Activity Award.
The award may be earned more than once; for instance, as a young person advances through the ranks and is capable of more complex preparedness activities, but only one pin may be worn.
Leave No Trace is a plan that helps people to be more concerned about their environment and to help them protect it for future generations. Leave No Trace applies in a backyard or local park (frontcountry) as much as it does in the wilderness (backcountry).
A pack can qualify for the National Summertime Pack Award by planning and conducting three pack activities - one each in June, July, and August. This award can be an incentive for greater attendance at your summer pack activities.
Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts may earn the Recruiter Strip by recruiting other boys to join scouts.
Bear scouts and Webelos scouts may earn the privilege of carrying a pocketknife to Cub Scout functions.
Training
Training shows new leaders how to do their jobs and allows for an interchange of ideas with more experienced leaders. Every Cub Scout deserves qualified, trained leaders who will provide the best program possible, the way it is intended. Trained leaders ensure that the goals of Cub Scouting are met. The leadership training program of the Boy Scouts of America provides this information and helps leaders become confident in carrying out their responsibilities.
BSA Online Learning Center
The BSA Online Learning Center provides a variety of materials, from quick references to complete courses, all designed to help our members improve leadership skills and deliver a quality program.
- Cub Scout Leader Fast Start
- As the first step in the training continuum, Fast Start Training is meant to provide all the information and resources for new leaders to conduct their first meeting, along with guidance for the meetings that follow.
- Basic Leader Training
- Basic Leader Training—including New Leader Essentials and position-specific training—is designed to prepare to all adult leaders in Cub Scouting to become effective in their roles.
- Wood Badge
- Wood Badge is advanced training in leadership skills for all adults in BSA programs.
- Outdoor Leader Skills for Webelos Leaders
- Designed specifically for Webelos den leaders and their assistants, this course teaches outdoor-related skills through demonstration and hands-on practice.
- Unit Leadership Enhancements
- Delivered as a regular part of the pack leaders' meeting, these short training discussions are intended to better equip pack leaders to conduct a quality Cub Scout program.
- Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO)
- Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation is a one-day training event that introduces the skills needed to plan and conduct pack outdoor activities.
- Trainer Development Conference
- The trainer development conference is part of a continuous process of updating trainers with the latest training methods, principles, and technologies.
- Youth Protection Training
- Every leader in Cub Scouting should complete Youth Protection training, which provides essential information about working with youth.
- Cub Scout Leader Roundtables
- Monthly roundtables provide an opportunity for leaders within a council to share ideas in an ongoing learning experience.
- Cub Scout Leader Pow Wow
- The pow wow is a "convention" for pack leaders that provides an opportunity to attend sessions addessing various facets of the Cub Scout program.
